Walk 265: Brookmans Park North-East Long Loop

19.7 miles (31.8km) with 337m of total ascent

This is one of the longest walks in our collection and was created for those who enjoy a full-day walk of almost 20 miles. You will pass two examples of WWII archaeology - a Tett turret and a spigot mortar emplacement. There are several pubs and cafes along the way. This route crosses a golf course and involves walking over two fairways.

Walk 179: Swallow Holes Loop

This walk was inspired by a day spent with geologist Michael Howgate, chair of the Amateur Geological Society. Michael, who leads guided tours in London, Hertfordshire and Essex, kindly agreed to take us on a walk around North Mymms so that we could create a route that passed a number of swallow holes and sink holes in Gobions Wood and at Water End.

Walk 85: North Mymms Park South Loop

This walk is a mix of peaceful remote locations and sections walking alongside the busy M25 and A1(M) motorways. The reason we have included the two sections close to major roads is that it enables walkers to follow a loop that takes in the southern part of North Mymms Park. This is a fairly stretching hike with a fair amount of uphill walking.

A circular walk from St Mary's Church, North Mymms through North Mymms Park and over to Welham Green via the old Dellsome Lane. Then dropping south over the fields to Water End and back to North Mymms parish church.

Walk 70: Welham Green to Brookmans Park Linear West

4.1 miles (6.7 km) with 67m total ascent

This walks starts at Welham Green station, climbs to a trig point with excellent views to the south and west, drops down to follow the route of the old Dellsome Lane, now reduced to a footpath, passes North Mymms Park, and returns to Brookmans Park via the swallow holes at Water End. The route covers part of a much longer walk on this site, the 12-mile North Mymms Way. The start and finish points can be reached by bus or train.

Walk 65: Mimmshall Brook Loop

8.4 miles (13.6 km) with 177m total ascent

 

This walk retraces parts of the route of a Victorian ramble through North Mymms written in 1893. We've adapted it considerably, and have chosen public footpaths to avoid main roads. Along the route you will come across a bridge over Mimmshall Brook which is said to be haunted by the ghosts of Dick Turpin and a local witch, and is plagued by a swarm of 'repulsive' black flies. But don't worry, we didn't see a thing when we visited.

Walk 51: Mymmshall Wood Loop

3 miles (4.7 km) with 91m total ascent

A pleasant circular walk through pine woods, oak woodland, over open fields and down footpaths through deep hedgerows. In July and August look out for the Purple Emperor butterfly along the way. There are no pubs along this route, but two close by. The route does cross fields where sheep graze. There are notices during lambing season to keep dogs on leads. The starting point is 1.8 miles SW from Brookmans Park station by road. This route offers plenty of shade during hot summer days if started before 07:30. After that, points 1 to 2 and 3 to 4 are exposed to the sun.

Walk 42: North Mymms to Hatfield North-West Linear

7.1 miles (11.4 km) with 49m total ascent

 

This walks starts at Brookmans Park station, heads over to Water End, turns north along the A1(M) to the village of Roestock, over to Sleapshyde, then ends at Hatfield station where you can catch a train back to the starting point.

We have archived this walk following feedback from a regular user of Hertfordshire Walker saying the crossing of the A414 is too dangerous. Please choose a different walk from the collection of 300 free walks. We will eventually replace Walk 42 with a new route.

Walk 32: Brookmans Park South-West Loop

7.8 miles (12.5 km) with 140m total ascent

 

An undulating walk heading S from Brookmans Park through a local nature reserve, across a disused golf course, over a pine wood hill, and back to Brookmans Park. The route involves quite a bit of hill climbing and some paths can be muddy after rain.

Walk 31: North Mymms South-West Loop

6.5 miles (10.5 km) with 93m total ascent

This circular walk starts from St Mary’s Church, North Mymms, and heads S through Cangsley Grove then over the Potwells Valley then down to the Colne Valley and via Colney Heath before looping back to North Mymms.

Walk 19: Welham Green South Loop

This walk is another in our collection of walks for those who want like to leave the car at home and travel by train. It starts and finishes at Welham Green Station and passes close to Brookmans Park Station, which is an alternative start and finish point.

About a third of the route is either through built-up areas (close to Welham Green Station) or along lanes and a road which has a pedestrian pavement. Because of this, dog owners might want to choose a different walk from the collection.

The walk passes The Woodman Inn at Water End and close to two other pubs along the way. There are cafes, restaurants, and shops in both Welham Green and Brookmans Park.

Walk 16: North Mymms Ridge Loop

6 miles (9.6 km) with 105m total ascent

This is a good hill walk that starts and finishes at Brookmans Park Station. At one point the route follows an old coaching road from South Mimms to North Mymms and crosses the secluded Potwells valley. There is a short part that is alongside the A1(M), but it is soon over. 

Walk 10: Brookmans Park Long Loop

This walk offers some great views of the rolling countryside around Brookmans Park following good footpaths and passing by or close to a number of local pubs. The route takes you through the middle of Gobions Wood, which is managed by the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust. The walk starts and finishes at Brookmans Park Station.

Walk 3: Water End Loop

A gentle circular walk from Brookmans Park Station to Water End and back. There is a pub called Brookmans at the start and finish, and The Woodman Inn at the halfway point. There are also cafes, restaurants, and shops in Brookmans Park. About a third of the walk is along lanes so if you have dogs or children you might want to pick another route.

Walk 1: The North Mymms Loop

This short walk takes you south along the old coaching road that once provided the main route between North Mymms and South Mimms. It crosses a quiet valley surrounded by rolling wooded hills, and follows footpaths edged by hedgerows rich in wild flowers.
