Walk 31: North Mymms SW Loop

Great views, undulating but not dog-friendly

6.03 miles (9.7 km)

Photograph of fields, woods and gate on Walk 31: North Mymms SW Loop

This is a wonderful, circular from North Mymms Church south over the hill towards South Mimms but turning right at the top of the hill and dropping down to the Colne Valley, over to Colney Heath and back to North Mymms.

The footpath goes through Coursers Farm where there is a sign on the public right of way saying no dogs.

Directions

  1. Park in the lane by North Mymms Church and head SW for 460m down St Mary’s Church Road, which is also North Mymms bridleway 2.
  2. When the road bends to the right, keep going SSW along the bridleway for 770m as it climbs the hill through Cangsley Grove
  3. At the top of the hill take the bridleway on your right, North Mymms bridleway 90, which becomes Ridge bridleway 44 and head SW for 440m until you come to a footpath on your right.
  4. Turn right on Ridge bridleway 10 and head SW for 850m until you reach a farm.
  5. Just beyond the farm take the footpath on your right, Ridge footpath 8 and head N and downhill. After 850m you reach a track where Ridge footpath 8 goes through the crops. This section can be overgrown, but there is an alternative route along a permissive path, marked in yellow above. Continue for a 1.2km until you reach Coursers Farm.
  6. Go through the farmyard (this is where you will find the no dogs notice) and follow Ridge footpath 8 until you reach Coursers Road.
  7. Cross Coursers Road and take the bridleway immediately opposite, Ridge bridleway 32 and follow this NE and then N for 1.2km as the track continues on the west side of Coursers Road, until you reach High Street Colney Heath to the right of the shops just past the coal post.
  8. Cross High Street and take the footpath opposite the shops, Colney Heath footpath 47 and follow it NE for 450m across two fields before it comes to a track on your right,
  9. Take this track, Colney Heath restricted byway 51, and follow it SE for 170m until you reach Roestock Lane.
  10. Cross the lane and head down the footpath directly opposite, Colney Heath footpath 23 for 85m looking out for a footpath on your left. This is Colney Heath footpath 48. Follow it SE and then E for 290m until you reach Bullens Green Lane
  11. Turn right on Bullens Green Lane and follow it S for 560m until you reach Tollgate Road.
  12. Turn left and head SSE on Tollgate Road for 50m before taking the footpath on your left after the farm. This is North Mymms footpath 41. Here you go diagonally to your left heading E towards the energy pylon in the middle of the field. Go under the pylon and continue E towards the A1 (M). Before you reach the A1 (M) you come to a farm track which you cross.
  13. Turn right when you get to the A1 (M) and head S until you reach the farm track again. Cross it to the right of the bridge over the A1 (M) and take the stairs on the other side of the track. Do not cross the A1 (M) bridge but stay on the west side.
  14. Keep walking SE with the A1 (M) on your left and the field on your right for 700m cutting diagonally SW through the crop heading for a distance wood. Go through a gate, through the woods and emerge on Tollgate Road.
  15. Cross with care and turn left past one of the entrances to North Mymms Park, then turn right up St Mary's Church Road and back to your car.
