Walk 27: Broxbourne Wood North Loop

Well signposted woodland walk

6.45 miles (10.4 km)

Picture taken on Walk 27 - Broxbourne Wood North Loop

Another magnificent walk through the enchanting Broxbourne Nature Reserve this time taking the northern loop. As with the southern loop, featured here, the northern path is well signposted throughout. Just follow the waymark posts with the green arrows and the White Admiral butterfly. Can't go wrong. When you have done this, try our Walk 26: Broxbourne Wood South Loop.

Aggressive horse warning

A walkers recently wrote with the following warning: “a very aggressive horse in the field behind a house at the intersection of Brickendon Liberty footpaths 15 and 25 (after point 2 on the map)  which attacked us for no reason, biting us repeatedly. Not sure how or who to report the horse to as somebody could be seriously injured. Luckily thick winter coats saved us”. We have reported the incident to the Hertfordshire County Council Right of Way team.

1: Park in the Broxbourne Nature Reserve car park (East), grid reference TL 32751 06932, and head E following the green signs with the black butterflies. For a while you will walk parallel to the road on your right and then turn left deeper into the woods. Continue following the signs until you circle round after 800m to cross Pembridge Lane.

2: Head SE for 270m on Brickendon Liberty footpath 15, before turning left on Brickendon Liberty footpath 25 and heading N for 190 back to Pembridge Lane. Cross the lane and head N on Brickendon Liberty footpath 13 for 480m before reaching a left turn.

3: Turn left here, still on Brickendon Liberty footpath 13, and heading NW for 710m until you reach the edge of the woodland. Head NNE across a field for 510m until you reach a path on the right.

4: Turn right and head NNE for 800m on Brickendon Liberty footpath 10 until you reach Monk’s Green.

5: Continue heading E through Monk’s Green and take Brickendon Liberty footpath 12 along the northern edge of the woodland for 930m until the footpath branches off to the left. At this point you continue walking along the northern edge of the woodland for 370m before reaching a left turn in the path.

6: Turn left on Brickendon Liberty restricted byway 24 for 95m before branching off to the right and following the footpath through the woods as it curves first N, then E, S, SW and SE for 1.3km.

7: Now head W along the southern edge of the woodland for 1.1km.

8: Here you turn left on Brickendon Liberty footpath 14 and head SE for 470m before reaching a path on the right.

9: Turn right and follow the path, Brickendon Liberty footpath 20, for 1.6km as it weaves W and then SW through the woods and meets Brickendon Liberty footpath 13 where you turn left for 110m before turning right and following the track through the woods and back to the car park.

It’s worth taking an Ordnance Survey map of app with you. If you don't want to buy the map you can download and print off accurate directions on this map of Broxbourne Woods.
