This is a wonderful loop around the town of Tring. The route has a bit of everything. You will walk alongside canals, through woodland, climb to excellent view points, and follow quiet country lanes. The first quarter is flat, the second is almost all uphill, the third quarter is a mix of up and down, and the final leg is flat.

This is the second walk in our collection that starts and finishes at The Alford Arms in the hamlet of Frithsden. The other, Walk 116: Frithsden NW Loop (5.9 miles), explores the countryside to the west, this one explores the footpaths and byways to the east. It’s a hilly walk, so be prepared for some serious ups and downs, but it’s worth it for the views.

This walk connects several of our earlier walks by adding one short path near Epping Green. The route crosses three ridges with excellent views and follows well-defined tracks most of the way. It can be hilly along the way with seven pubs either on the route or a short detour off it.

Walk 11: West End Loop

6.1 miles (9.8 km) with 215m total ascent

This undulating walk along footpaths, byways and quiet lanes taking in woodland, rivers, and open spaces involves a lot of up and down with a total elevation gain of almost 400ft. The route involves 1.4km of lane walking, but there are options to step aside on the grass verge in the case of traffic.
