This linear route follows the course of the former railway line between Welwyn Garden City (WGC) and Wheathampstead. It includes almost the entire length of Ayot Greenway, a former branch line which linked WGC with Luton and Dunstable.

Looking back from just before point 11
This is a lovely walk in undulating countryside to the north of Ayot Green. It is an area we have explored before but on different rights of way and quiet country lanes. This new route offers totally new perspectives.

Walk 230: Welwyn Garden City Short Loop

2 miles (3.3 km) with 42m total ascent

We've had many requests for walks in the shade and for walks on the flat, so we decided to add this short walk to try to meet both needs. The route starts and finishes in the car park at Campus West in Welwyn Garden City then heads west along the eastern section of Ayot Greenway through Sherrardspark Wood, which is one of Hertfordshire's largest and most important oak and hornbeam woodlands, before returning the same way.

Walk 223: Sherrardspark Wood Loop

3.7 miles (5.9 km) with 79m of total ascent

This is a lovely walk exploring Sherrardspark Wood, a 75-hectares site of ancient woodland within walking distance of Welwyn Garden Station. The area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Local Nature Reserve. There are many trails through the woodland making it a great place to just wander and explore. We have chosen some of the prettier paths and created a loop which we hope you enjoy.

This walk starts and finishes at The Ayot Greenway car park then follows the track of the old railway almost as far as Wheathampstead before circling N and E through Ayot St Lawrence,  then looping back via Ayot Place. Daffodils in early spring and bluebells soon after.

This walk starts and ends in the Ayot Greenway car park just north of Ayot Green. It crosses open fields, reaches the halfway point at Ayot St Lawrence where you can take a break at The Brocket Arms, and then returns through wooded paths and bridleways as they weave their way back to the car park via the Ayot Greenway.

Walk 38: Ayot Greenway South Loop

4.5 miles (7.2 km) with 85m total ascent

This is a lovely walk that crosses a golf course, passes Brocket Hall, goes through woodland, follows a riverside footpath, and continues along the track of the old railway branch line between Hertford, Welwyn Garden City, Luton and Dunstable. The walk starts and finishes at The Waggoners pub/restaurant, Ayot Green. The starting point is two miles NW of Welwyn Garden City station by road.

Walk 12: Old Welwyn Loop

This walk starts in a small car park at the eastern end of the Ayot Greenway then crosses some lovely rolling countryside before dropping down to Welwyn, often called Old Welwyn, a village in the valley of the River Mimram, where you will find several pubs, restaurants, cafes and shops selling refreshments. At a few sections of this walk you will be aware of the sound of the A1(M) and there is some urban walking as you enter and leave Welwyn. A couple of sections of the route can be muddy after rain.
