This is a walk for lovers of wide open spaces. It offers amazing views as it crosses the undulating countryside north-east of Hitchwood. The route follows well-defined rights of way and some quiet country lanes as it weaves its way past Rush Green and St Paul's Walden. The walk passes two pubs along the way.

Walk 267: St Paul's Walden East Loop

4.3 miles (6.9 km) with 92m of total ascent

We really enjoyed this walk which explores the rolling and extremely quiet countryside east of St Paul's Walden. The walk starts and finishes outside All Saints Church close to The Strathmore Arms. From there it heads north then east along bridleways, footpaths, byways, and quiet country lanes. At times all you can hear is birdsong interrupted only by the odd plane.

Walk 190: Whitwell North Loop

2.75 miles (4.4 km) with 89m of total ascent

This short walk explores the countryside north of Whitwell, crossing the River Mimram twice and visiting the hamlet of St Paul's Walden where you can stop for refreshments at The Strathmore Arms. There is also a pub, The Bull Inn, and Emily's Tea Shop in Whitwell village. This walk has been created in response to a number of followers of Hertfordshire Walker who asked for shorter routes.

Walk 154: Whitwell Loop

7.2 miles (11.5 km) with 188m of total ascent

This walk circles the village of Whitwell, following footpaths, bridleways, and byways, over rolling hills with views across open countryside. It has a fair amount of up and down as it crosses the River Mimram twice before dropping down towards Kimpton then looping back. The walk starts and finishes at The Bull Inn, Whitwell, then passes close to The Strathmore Arms at St Paul's Walden.

Walk 75: Hitchwood Loop

This is a pleasant walk taking in three trails: the Hitchwood Trail, parts of the Hertfordshire Way, and the North Chiltern Trail. It leads down shady footpaths and over fields with open views. Two-thirds of the way round there is the possibility of a short detour to visit The Strathmore Arms, famous for its real ale. The walk can be enjoyed in about an hour and a half taken at a leisurely pace.
