Ayot Greenway between points 8 & 9
This linear route follows the course of the former railway line between Welwyn Garden City (WGC) and Wheathampstead. It includes almost the entire length of Ayot Greenway, a former branch line which linked WGC with Luton and Dunstable.

Walk 258: Wheathampstead South-East Loop

7.7 miles (12.3 km) with 114m of total ascent

Bluebells along Devil's Dyke between points 30 & 31
This is a lovely varied route that includes riverside and woodland walking as well as stretches across open rolling countryside. It involves several rights of way which are included in other walks in our collection but links them in a new loop which passes along footpath and bridleways not visited before. There is a small amount of lane walking.

Walk 209: Gustard Wood South Loop

4.7 miles (7.6 km) with 89m of total ascent

This walk starts and finishes at a small car park close to Gustard Wood Common then heads S to Wheathampstead where we detour along the restored platform of the former Wheathampstead station before heading E along the River Lea then N through woodland and across open fields. The route passes The Cross Keys pub at Gustard Wood near the end.

Walk 143: Wheathampstead North Loop

7.1 miles (11.5 km) with 99m of total ascent

This is one of our favourite walks in the collection. It starts in the village of Wheathampstead which has several cafes and restaurants and three pubs. There is a car park which, at the time of writing, is free of charge. The route follows the Lea Valley Walk before following a disused railway branch line, the Ayot Greenway, then looping round to the north passing close to two more pubs before returning to Wheathampstead.

Walk 39: Ayot Greenway West Loop

4.8 miles (7.7 km) with 52m total ascent

This is a lovely walk along part of the Lea Valley Walk and Ayot Greenway, a former railway branch line. The wildflowers along the River Lea are impressive in the summer. The walk starts and finishes in a council car park at Wheathampstead. There are plenty of refreshment opportunities in the village.
