Walk 172: Breachwood Green North-East Loop

6.1 miles (9.8 km) with 161m of total ascent

The views to the NW between points 9 & 10
This is a lovely walk that takes in parts of three other routes in our collection but walked in reverse and creating a wholly different experience. It is so good we even considered doing it the following day. We had a lovely pint at The Plough in Ley Green at the halfway point.

The walk crosses Kingswalden Park, where there are an estimated 300 oak trees, many about 400 years old. One is called the Domesday Oak because it is thought to be more than 1,000 years old. This walk across the rolling Chiltern Hills (be ready for some steep up and down) starts and finishes at The Red Lion in Breachwood Green, where we have enjoyed refreshments on previous walks. You will hear the sound of air traffic taking off and landing at nearby Luton airport, but it's worth putting up with for the views across open countryside that this walk offers.

The OS map then has King's Walden footpath 14 heading NE across the field before turning SE along the side of Watkin's Wood. Rather than trample through the crop we followed the well-trodden route between the marker posts. See map below which shows the OS route for King's Walden footpath 15 in blue and the OS route for King's Walden footpath 14 in red. The route we took, following a path already worn through the crop, is in green.

  1. Loved this walk which we did today. So quiet we hardly saw anyone and even the planes coming and going to Luton airport were few and far between. Had to dodge a big herd of cows who were right on the footpath blocking the way just before we came to the Plough where we had a drink in their big garden - only 4 other people there maybe because it was Easter Sunday. The two trees you mentioned being down on Footpath 17 hadnt been cleared so there was a bit of crawling under things in my case and over things in my husband's. Really enjoyable walk helped by the glorious sunshine. One to add to the favourites list. Thanks again for publishing all the walks - and all free :)

  2. We really enjoyed this walk which we completed this morning. We will remember it for the beautiful bluebell woods and far ranging views across the valleys. The two fallen trees on footpath 17 have still to be cleared away and are barely passable but the cows mentioned in another comment had been moved to another field. Thank you for sharing; we hope to walk it again sometime. In the meantime we too, will report the fallen trees to the county Rights of Way people.

    1. Thanks for reporting the trees to HCC they are usually quick to respond; perhaps they are catching up following the Easter break. Glad you enjoyed the walk.

  4. We completed this lovely walk on Wednesday 3 May. There were wonderful displays of bluebells at several places and especially in Tache Wood. We didn't come across any fallen trees, so I assume these had been cleared. One field that we crossed had a large bull and many bullocks in it, but fortunately they took little notice of us.

  5. We did this walk today on a very soggy new year's eve and combined it with 153 to make a long day out! We loved both walks despite the weather & the very soggy ground. Plenty of puddles but great views & the aeroplanes kept our teenagers keen! We will definitely return in the spring or summer. Thanks for the great routes.
