This is a pleasant short walk through Broxbourne Woods, including Bencroft Wood and Wormley Wood. The route passed The Woodman & Olive pub. * If you had travelled the same way 170 years earlier you might have found queues of people, many with carts loaded with coal, wine, clothing and food, haggling with the taxman. The coal tax markers were erected following the Coal Duties Act of 1851 at 250 points 20 miles from the City of London. So this quiet bridleway in the middle of Broxbourne Woods was once a busy thoroughfare. I wrote a feature about the posts for The North Mymms History Project some years ago if you are interested in knowing more.
4: Keep left at the coal tax marker then head S, now on Cheshunt bridleway 76, for 340m until you reach a track on the left (location - https://w3w.co/kept.icon.erase), see image below.

  1. There is a fallen tree over the track, it is possible to climb around it but it is a little awkward. I think this was at point 5.

    1. Thanks for the feedback. Are you able to report the blockage to Hertfordshire County Council using the online form please? They usually deal with these things promptly.

  2. Hi David - I just completed this walk this morning with the dog. I'm local to the area so know the woods well, they're fabulous.

At instruction "6.5", turn right then immediately left, I missed the left hand turn (despite also having the GPX loaded on the OS Map App!). Going straight on instead of left took me along the path to Biggs Grove (the path is clear from your map), East for a while running parallel to West End Road, then North to the back gate of the Woodman and Olive.

I thought this was a much nicer route versus walking along the road?

Anyway, just thought I'd share, keep up the great work.

    1. Hi Campbell, sorry you missed the left turn. I have been trying to figure out the point you mean but I can't find the text in the directions between points 6 & 7 which you described as saying "turn right then immediately left". What I did find in my directions is a line which reads "head N for 270m until the footpath bends to the right then heads E for 35m before bending to the left". These are Cheshunt footpath 27 and then Brickendon Liberty footpath 18. I have checked the GPX file for the walk and it does follow the route described in my directions. So I am struggling to find out where it went wrong for you. But you are right, if you don't turn left on Brickendon Liberty footpath 18 and instead continue heading E on the unofficial path that heads to Briggs Grove that is a nice alternative. Really sorry you got a bit lot but glad it didn't spoil the walk. If you haven't already done so please consider joining our Hertfordshire Walker Facebook group where fellow walkers are sharing tips and photographs from their walks. David
