Walk 224: Ayot St Lawrence West Loop

This is a really nice walk exploring a section of the countryside W of Ayot St Lawrence. The route crosses rolling countryside with some great views N following well-defined paths and bridleways. Regular users of our walks will notice that the route revisits rights of way we have used before, but this time walked in the opposite direction.

The route is possible thanks to a landowner allowing a permissive path to link two public rights of way so that walkers can avoid walking alongside a road. The walk starts and finishes at The Brocket Arms in Ayot St Lawrence then passes The Cross Keys at Gustard Wood two thirds of the way round. There is also the possibility of a short detour close to the halfway point to visit The Boot at Kimpton.

Walk 222: Kimpton South-West Loop

5.3 miles (8.4km) with 105m of total ascent

This walk explores the rolling countryside to the SW of Kimpton, offering wide, open views. You will cross two arable fields which, when we tested this walk in November, had not yet been reinstated after cultivation. The route also includes two lengths of lane walking where there are no pedestrian pavements, but both sections have grass verges where you can step to one side if traffic approaches and both sections were quiet when we tested the route.

Walk 191: Kimpton North-West Loop

This walk offers wonderful views across the rolling hills north and west of Kimpton. It includes some paths that feature in other walks in our collection, so regular uses of Hertfordshire Walker might recognise some of the sections from having walked other loops. The walk starts and finishes at The Boot, but can be adjusted if you want to start and finish at the village car park. There is a cafe attached to the village shop which you pass at the end of the walk. The starting point is 4.4 miles NE from Harpenden station by road.

Walk 82: Kimpton North Short Loop

If you want a walk over open fields with great views of the rolling Hertfordshire countryside, then this route is ideal. It starts in the village of Kimpton, heads north to the outskirts of Whitwell, then returns following a circular route. The walk follows well-marked paths and is mostly along remote tracks apart from the start and finish in Kimpton and a short stretch as you pass Whitwell.

Walk 48: Kimpton Loop

5.2 miles (8.3 km) with 123m total ascent

Rolling hills, secluded footpaths, bridleways and byways cutting through woodland and crossing farmland with open views. There is a pub at the start and finish point and one close to the halfway point. See if you can spot the wood carvings along the footpath between points 2 and 3. And if you need a rest there are a couple of well-placed benches between points 7 and 8 offering great views to the south.
