This circular walk starts and ends in Brookmans Park, then passes through Little Heath, on to Northaw, through the outskirts of Cuffley, on to Newgate Street, and across to Wildhill before heading back to Brookmans Park.

We have archived this walk because it follows a dangerous section of The Hertfordshire Way along Carbone Hill. We will republish when there is better pedestrian protect from traffic.

  1. Did this in August 2021,an excellent walk overall, although the advertised unpleasant stretch along a road was not great - fairly busy with high speed traffic and minimal verges. The path at section 7 was very rough going, overgrown with nettles and brambl

  2. Did this in August 2021,an excellent walk overall, although the advertised unpleasant stretch along a road was not great - fairly busy with high speed traffic and minimal verges. The path at section 7 was very rough going, overgrown with nettles and brambles, narrow and uneven. Part 31 I couldn't follow, no obvious cut through the woodland, but found a different way to join up with the path.

Gripes aside, a lovely afternoon with some excellent views and a good amount of variety. Pub stops are still going strong.

  3. Hi,
Yes, I totally agree. That bit is not pleasant. But it is the only way to create a loop. And that route is part of the official Hertfordshire Way, so it seems others have found it hard to work out an alternative.
    But sorry it was difficult.
And yes, there are many sections overgrown with nettles and brambles late August. We recommend people wear long trousers, and we take secateurs and anti-hystamine cream this time of the year.
But glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for the feedback.

  4. A long hard walk with a lot of ascent, my watch said 94 floors and 32,000 steps and my legs agree totally! Points 7-8 are always muddy, once section is sloping making it more difficult so make sure you have a pole to help, or you could hang on to the rusty barbed wire fence! Carbone Hill was quite busy and the verges, when present, were quite narrow. When you see a wood on your right go into it for a while to avoid the road, others are doing that as there is a path but leave it when you see a house/garden appear in front of you, or you can't get back out to the road because of dense vegetation.
