Public right of way blocked with electric fencing

Guard dog warnings on Epping Green footpath

A section of a public footpath in Epping Green, Hertfordshire has been blocked with electric fencing.

A hand-written sign diverts walkers over uneven ground thick with nettles, thistles and brambles.

Signs have been put up along the right of way warning of guard dogs.

The footpath is Little Berkhamstead footpath 14 which heads NE from alongside The Beehive pub/restaurant in Epping Green to Little Berkhamstead bridleway 23.

A piece of paper attached to the fence reads "ELECTRIC FENCE GO ROUND". It doesn't appear to be an official Hertfordshire County Council sign, which would normally be put up for right of way diversions. There are no signs suggesting an application has been submitted for re-routing the footpath - which would normally be the case.

The section affected is a 150m stretch across the field between two gates. Both gates on this public right of way have guard dog warning signs attached.

The gate with the first warning is 270m along footpath 14 between two fields (location - https://w3w.co/ridge.drove.dragon), see image below. The electric fence is 90m beyond the gate and stretches for 70m.

The second gate at the north-east end of footpath 14 also has a warning sign, but this gate does not have a diversion notice. The electric fence is just 5m beyond the gate (location - https://w3w.co/listed.mixer.lungs), see image below.

Walkers will need long trousers and a stick to push their way through the overgrowth on the diversion. The land underfoot is uneven and close to a ditch.

The blocked footpath features in four of the walks on Hertfordshire Walker, including the popular Walk 4: Epping Green Loop (3 miles).

Hertfordshire Walker has reported the situation to the Hertfordshire County Council Rights Of Way team which is always quick to respond to such matters.
